In this Drill Down: Home energy storage is having its moment

What does the rise of rooftop solar and home energy storage mean for your brand?

Energy storage for solar at record high interest and record low prices

In the first half of 2024, more than a third of homeowners who bought solar panels through Energy Sage, also purchased a battery according to the company’s 19th semiannual “Solar & Storage Marketplace Report.” Just a year ago, only around 10 percent of customers attached storage to their systems. The company points to increased demand and falling prices as key reasons that have led to more storage adoption.

“Severe weather events like Hurricanes Helene and Milton have shown how solar coupled with energy storage can keep the lights on regardless of what’s happening with the larger grid,” said one expert.

The S/M Take:

With energy storage costs plummeting and curiosity skyrocketing, home solar systems and battery storage are the hottest trends in green energy. Recent “anti-net metering” measures have made it harder for solar owners to sell energy back to the grid, prompting a boom in battery storage.

The broader impact? Solar panels don't only reduce or eliminate electric bills for their owners, they also slash the cost of providing electricity to whole neighborhoods.

The implication for marketers? We’re rocketing through early adoption and headed to the mainstream. For existing homes, consider the ROI-friendly promise of retrofits. For new homes, a “selfish sustainability” psychology is in play for this generation of buyers.

Energy storage solutions driving net-zero transition, says GlobalData

In the race to achieve net-zero emissions, advanced energy storage technologies are emerging as a game-changer, transforming how various sectors harness renewable power, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

The latest breakthroughs, ranging from sodium-ion batteries that slash costs and improve safety to ultra-fast charging solutions that accelerate EV adoption, are reshaping energy management across automotive, aerospace, residential, and commercial and industrial sectors. More here: (Source)

The S/M Take:

As energy storage goes mainstream, it’s reshaping net-zero goals for homes and businesses alike. A net-zero home is inching toward reality.

The enthusiasm is real, evidenced by the weight of the players in home storage: LG, Tesla, and Panasonic. And now another familiar name, General Motors, is making moves. GM Energy is expanding its portfolio with the launch of the GM Energy PowerBank, a stationary storage product that gives EV owners the power to store and transfer energy from the grid, and the option of integrating with solar power equipment.

The Drill Down is reading the tea leaves, and they all come up sustainability. Does your brand have its story ready? (Ahem...we can help with that.)

Realtor reveals the unexpected benefit of rooftop solar: “A huge selling point”

As communities respond to the challenges of rising global temperatures, they can also capitalize on the opportunities it presents.

Among clean energies, solar power has become one of the fastest-growing technologies. Small-scale rooftop solar energy is growing rapidly in the U.S., having produced 10 times as much power in 2022 as a decade earlier. Today, Realtors are revealing the unexpected benefit of rooftop solar energy.

A report from Zillow found that properties with a rooftop solar panel system sold for 4.1% more compared to homes without a solar power system, according to a CNET release. For a median-valued home, this would be up to $9,300 in value. More here: (Source)

The S/M Take:

The data is both compelling and surprising. More and more, today’s prospective homeowners are drawn to properties with solar setups and energy storage. That turns a solar + battery install into a green play in more ways than one.

But competition is in the wind, coming from the Netherlands. This silent residential wind turbine is set to challenge solar panels for the progressive homeowner’s dollar.

And as long as we’re surfacing all the likely customer questions, let’s ask one more: What happens when solar panels die?
