In this Drill Down: What’s hot and what’s definitely not in 2025

The kingmaker of social trends can’t stop won’t stop… unless the government pulls the plug
by The Drill Down Team on January 28, 2025

If you’re thinking of refreshing your space this year, TikTok is swarming with inspiration. The social media platform’s home sector has over 7.6 million videos to browse through, with spotlights on the emerging interior design trends of 2025 on the rise. More here: (Source)

The S/M Take:

This story was nearly an eulogy, and by the time you read this, it may be one. But as of today TikTok is alive and kicking, and man does it have influence. Politics aside, if your brand is influenced by viral trends, you cannot dismiss the gravity of TikTok for interior design marketing. At least for now.

The S/M Take:

Changing tastes are the lifeblood of our industry; otherwise we’d just live with our grandmother’s wallpaper for 75 years and there would be a lot less home improvement. Customers call out paint company over controversial name found on store shelf: 'Seems ... really scary'

It may be true that a good paint job warms up a room, but social media users have called into question a paint name tied to the planet's overheating.

"'Climate Change' seems like a really scary name for a paint chip of a wispy, moss-tinted white that would look great in my bathroom," wrote one Redditor. More here: (Source)

The S/M Take:

Clearly the folks at Behr were listening to audience insights on Reddit, because in the last few weeks “Climate Change” has vanished from their catalog. What remains, however, is the equally terrifying (but quite lovely) “Tornado Season.”
